A hike worth taking does not have to be a solitary stroll through a shaded forest. Black Hoof Park, in Lenexa, KS is an excellent example of a city park done well. With a stunning artistic dam and spillway that is wheelchair and stroller friendly, this park provides a unique experience that is accessible to everyone.
The most stunning feature of Black Hoof Park is the 50ft dam and spillway at the east end of Lake Lenexa. From the overlook bridge, you can watch the water below as it works its way through a series of intricate obstacles. Each obstacle along the water’s journey through the spillway is an artistic representation of a stage of the water cycle.
Great care was taken to make Black Hoof Park accessible for everyone to visit. Wide paved pathways with minimal slopes mean that the majority of this park is fully ADA accessible. Even the top and bottom of the spillway is accessible via a beautifully landscaped slope.
Are you interested in learning about the plant and trees indigenous to the area? You will find small silver plaques dotted all the way along the 2-mile trail around Lake Lenexa. Each plaque includes the description of a nearby tree along with an image to help you identify the tree by its leaf pattern. This is a great educational opportunity for kids and adults alike.
Though I do not wish to distract from the positive aspects of this park, it is worth noting that the area is susceptible to heavy noise pollution. This is due to the shooting range located on the property next to the park. Be aware that distant gunshots can be heard throughout the daylight hours, which may be disturbing to pets.
